Mesothelioma Surgery
Malignant mesothelioma is commonly treated with surgery during which your doctor may remove part of the lining of the chest and lung (pleural mesothelioma) or abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma), and some of the tissue around it. Depending on how far the mesothelioma has spread, your doctor may also remove a lung (pleural mesothelioma) in an operation called a pneumonectomy. In some cases part of the diaphragm, the muscle below the lungs that helps with breathing, is also removed.
Another form of surgery used for pleural mesothelioma is a pleurodesis. Antibiotics or talc are used to irritate the pleural space which prevents recurrent pleural effusions.
